Candidates have differing opinions about how best to lead the school system.  Tom Baine is committed to:

  • The security and safety of students, employees, and their environments.
  • Integrity, honesty, and discipline on all levels.
  • Improving the work environments for teachers, including proper provisioning (books, supplies, etc.) for effective job performance and competitive pay.
  • Improving the work environment of school administrators by making sure they have the resources to effectively manage their schools.
  • Improving the education of students by "raising the bar" with regards to expectations, accountability, and provisioning required to be successful.
  • Fiscal responsibility; making sure taxpayers get the most "bang for their buck."  I advocate the elimination of superfluous programs and other forms of wasteful spending. These funds would be best utilized elsewhere.
  • Stricter dress codes and the proper enforcement of those codes.
  • Greater support for faculty with regards to enforcing disciplinary action, and greater student accountability with regards to established rules and laws.
  • Improving performance on all levels, with particular emphasis on the high schools with alarming failing rates at present (10 of 19 high schools in Duval County received a grade of D or F in 2009).
  • Improving graduation rates and minimizing drop-out rates.
  • Providing every student with the opportunity to be well-prepared for college, and life, by the time they graduate.
  • Maintaining political and historical objectivity in public education to preserve integrity.
  • Advocating aviation and maritime education programs.
  • Supporting arts, foreign language, and sports programs.
  • Putting a stop to cronyism in the school system. Cronyism always results in corruption, inefficiency, and unprofessionalism and is not conducive to a positive work and learning environment.
  • Term limits for the school board members. No candidate should ever serve more than two terms.

The Duval County School Board needs fresh ideas from experienced external leaders.  Tom Baine has what it takes to make a difference in improving education in Duval County. A vote for Tom is a step in the right direction!
